WHAT'S

NOW PROGRAM on assertiveness training. July 2nd. 8:00 p.m. Trinity Cathedral..

NOW BUSINESS MEETING. July 9th. 8:00 p.m. Trinity Cathedral.

D.Y.K.E.(Dykes You Know Everywhere) is a new group. Originally, it had been formed as a lesbian CR group but a decision was made at the first meeting to keep the group open and growing and to try to address itself to the need for lesbian social contacts outside of the bar, in addition to being a forum for consciousness raising. The group meets every Monday night. The new format is:

7:00-8:30 Action/ Education Meeting 8:30-10:00 Small groups Rap

Small groups will form as new members are added. There is one group of 10, the original women that started DYKE, which will be a closed group.

DYKE has chosen as its first education/ action campaign to take up Rita Mae Brown's challenge that everybody wear a purple star and get it over with., i.e. to remove the threat from the label "lesbian" by all women saying "Yeah, I'm a lesbian, so what?" The group is going to produce purple star T-shirts and buttons for sale.

We are also interested in producing some regular articles in What She Wants on issues related to lesbianism. All women are invited to participate in the group. Women can come to both parts of the Monday night meetings or to either half. Metting places change back and forth across town so call Cleveland Women's Counseling for place of next meeting (CWC hours, MWF, 9:30a.m. to 2:30, T 7:00p.m.. to 9:00p.m., 321-8585) DYKE is open to new ideas, input and feedback. Come to meetings or write CWC P.O. Box 18472, Cleveland Hts., 44118.

WATERGATE SPECIAL PROSECUTOR IGNORED: "JUST A WOMAN” (LNS)

Jill Vollner, the assistant special prosecutor in the Watergate case, says that some of the Watergate defendants didn't take her seriously early in the investigation simply because she was a woman.

"The first time I met with Jeb Magruder and his lawyer," said Vollner, "they assumed I was a secretary. When a male assistant prosecutor asked them if they wanted some coffee, Magruder imme. diately turned to me and said, "I'll take mine black." Later Magruder compounded his error in the courtroom by answering Vollner's cross-examination questions "yes sir" and "no sir".

WOMEN APPEAL SEX DISCRIMINATION SUIT ON SEXUAL ADVANCES (LNS)

Being subjected to sexual advances on a job is not a violation of civil rights, or so decided an Arizona judge in a suit brought by two women against their former employer and supervisor.

The women say that a male supervisor in an Arizona optical factory subjected them to persistent verbal and physical sexual advances. The two finally quit "because the working conditions made it intolerable," according, to their attorney. Their suit charges the supervisor and employer with sex discrimination.

In March, however, according to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. District Judge William Frey granted the defense's motion to dismiss the lawsuit partly, he said, because the supervisor's acts were "satisfying a personal urge. Certainly no employer policy is here involved." The women are appealing the judge's decision. A legal victory could encourage similar suits by women who resent "either putting up with it or losing your job," their lawyer points out.

HAPPENING

All around the country women are organizing to change their lives: women are beginning childcare centers, fighting for abortion, organizing unions, creating a new culture. At a national conference on socialist/feminism, July 4-6, hundreds of women will come to. gether to discuss this work,

The conference planners, representatives of about ten socialist/feminist organizations throughout the country, expect from 300-600 women to participate. The goal of this Socialist/Feminist Conference will be not only -to share local experiences and organizing prac tice but also to discuss how women integrate socialism and feminism to challenge institutions and effect radical social change.

There are four major components of the conference: 1) theoretical presentations in meetings of the whole, 2) strategic workshops on workplace organizing, community organizing, and building the socialist/feminist move. ment, 3) skill-sharing workshops on specific interest and issues area, and 4) women's cul. ture activities to share fun and joyousness.

The planning committee welcomes women organizers, activists and interested feminists who want to discuss their work and concerns within the context of the following principles of unity:

I. We recognize the necessity of the autonomous women's movement throughout the revolutionary process.

2. We agree that all oppression whether based on race, class, sex, or sexual preference is inter-related and that fights for liberation from oppression must be simultaneous and cooperative,

3. We agree that socialist/ feminism is a strategy for revolution. For more information about the conference, write or call the above address.

LESBIAN GROUP ISSUES MEDIA GUIDELINES (LNS)

New York's Lesbian Feminist Libération (LFL) has published guidelines for the media, demanding a radical change in the portrayal of lesbians. "We ask that you seek out positive scripts and programming, and begin portraying characters and situations more congruent with our reality."

Included in the guidelines are demands that lesbians and/or material about lesbians be frequently included in all kinds of programming; that all scripts involving lesbianism be submitted to local lesbian groups prior to production; that networks maintain lesbian consultants for such scripts, just as they consult with "experts" in law, medicine, Third World people, etc.; and that anti-feminist or anti-lesbian reporters not be assigned to cover lesbian or women's movement news.
